The new Smart Moore Balance Brace, created as a result of a partnership between Redmond, Wash-based Sensoria Fitness and Hauppage, NY-based Orthotic Holdings Inc, is an orthotic designed to help prevent falls.

A media release announcing the partnership notes that the brace—an Internet-connected version of the Moore Balance Brace, which launched in 2010—recently debuted at the healthcare technologies global conference Health 2.0 in Santa Clara, Calif.

Per the release, the foot and ankle support was designed to help reduce the risk of falls by helping to improve the wearers’ balance and stability. It has now received a smart update to help clinicians monitor their patients’ adherence, activity levels, and gait parameters.

“Most wrist-worn wearable devices cannot accurately detect activity of elderly people with limited mobility. Therefore, caregivers have limited visibility to patients’ activities outside of the clinic, where most of the time is spent,” says Davide Vigano, CEO and co-founder of Sensoria, in the release.

“By embedding our proprietary textile sensors into this fall-prevention device, clinicians can now gain access to patients’ activity level and improve care delivery,” he adds.

Jason Krauss, president and COO of OHI, shares in the release that, “We are so excited to bring an IoT-enabled orthotic to the market, and we hope this will be the first of many successful product developments with Sensoria.”
