The American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) reports that a recent National Public Radio feature showcased a new leg brace designed to reduce amputations and allow wounded soldiers to run again.
The APTA notes that the story describes the success of the IDEO brace, a device that is being used to treat wounded veterans at the Center for the Intrepid facility in the Brooke Army Medical Center, near San Antonio, Texas.
PT Johnny Gray Owens was reportedly recorded for the story as he helped two brace wearers familiarize themselves with the device and monitored their exercises, which included running. Owens goes on to emphasize his feelings connected to helping soldiers use their limbs when they might have otherwise requested amputation after seeing other veterans achieve greater mobility through prosthetics.
