The National Mobility Equipment Dealers Association (NMEDA) announces the kickoff of National Mobility Awareness Month.

The campaign, which takes place in May, is designed to educate seniors, veterans, caregivers, and people with disabilities about wheelchair-accessible vehicles and adaptive mobility equipment options that enable them to live active and mobile lives, according to a media release from NMEDA.

Part of the campaign is an online contest in which “Local Heroes” are awarded a wheelchair-accessible vehicle tailored to their needs. Sponsors providing the vehicles for 2016 are Fiat Chrysler, Toyota Mobility, and Valley Honda Dealers. NMEDA members BraunAbility, Vantage Mobility International, and ElDorado Mobility are customizing the vehicles.

To enter the contest, “We encourage caregivers, friends, and family members to submit written or video stories of how they are triumphing over their mobility challenges and positively impacting the lives of the people around them,” explains Dave Hubbard, executive director and CEO of NMEDA, in the release.

Story submissions begin on April 12, and voting begins May 3. Submission and votes will be accepted through May 31. Winners for 2016 will be announced in mid June, per the release.
