Global nonprofit organization Achilles International announces that it is opening a chapter of its organization in Havana, Cuba.

“We are very excited to expand Achilles’ remarkable training and support programs to Cuba,” says Achilles International founder and president Dr Richard Traum, in a media release.

“I am also very pleased to learn that members of Associacion Cubana de Limitados Fisico-Motores—the association that represents people with disabilities in Cuba—are interested in joining our new chapter,” he adds.

The organization, which encourages all people with disabilities to participate in running events and other athletic activities alongside the general able-bodied public, has expanded to chapters in 15 major US cities and 42 countries, the release explains.

Its signature event is the Hope & Possibility 5-Mile Run/Walk, a race in which able-bodied people and athletes with disabilities compete together. Other Achilles programs include its Freedom Team of Wounded Veterans program and the Achilles Kids Program.

Membership in Achilles International is free and includes race entry, coaching, workouts, team T-shirts, and the organization’s digital newsletter, The Achilles Heel, per the release.
