The results of a recent randomized controlled trial on the use of cooled radiofrequency (RF) to treat sacrolliac joint (SJ) in the lower back exhibit potential interventional treatment. According to Kimberly-Clark Health Care, headquartered in Roswell, Ga,  the study encompassed 51 patients, with 34 in the treatment group and 17 in the control group.

Kimberly-Clark Health Care reports that study participants were treated using its Sinergy Cooled Radiofrequency system. Researchers note that at a 3-month follow-up, study participants were treated with cooled radiofrequency. The results indicate that the patients exhibited significant improvements in pain, disability, and quality of life outcomes. Researchers add that at a 9-month follow-up, 59% of the treated participants exhibited treatment success.

Nilesh Patel, MD, Advanced Pain Management, Green Bay, Wis, reportedly led the study. “The trial results indicate cooled radiofrequency is a much-needed interventional treatment that offers a safe and effective option for alleviating chronic, difficult-to-treat low back pain,” Patel says. The findings suggest that the treatment may help patients experience less pain and discomfort over time, in order to resume a more active lifestyle.
