llinois State Rep Elizabeth Coulson, PT, will seek the state’s 10th Congressional District seat  in the US House of Representatives that Rep Mark Kirk is leaving in 2010 to run for the US Senate.

If she wins the seat, Coulson will be the first physical therapist to serve in the US Congress, says the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA), Alexandria, Va.

Coulson has served in the Illinois General Assembly since 1997. She has worked to expand prescription drug programs for seniors and people with disabilities; advance medical malpractice reform; bring Illinois to the forefront of research for various cancers, including breast, cervical, and prostate cancers; expand community-based health centers; and teach preventive care to reduce the high costs of emergency department visits, hospitalizations, and administrative activities, says the APTA.
