Tibion, NASA Research Park, Moffett Field, Calif, has won the Silicon Valley/San Jose Business Journal Emerging Technology Award (ETA) for medical devices for its PowerKnee—the company’s first product.

PowerKnee is a wearable bionic device for the leg that actively and transparently supplements muscle strength. The device enhances rehabilitation, helps patients improve muscle strength and function, and provides assistance with activities of daily living.

"With this technology, we have the potential to profoundly impact the lives of patients dealing with loss of muscle function due to surgery, stroke, or chronic diseases such as multiple sclerosis," says Kern Bhugra, the company’s CEO and co-founder.

The ETA program recognizes innovations and accomplishments of technology-oriented companies in Silicon Valley.

Tibion develops smart medical devices and therapies that address the needs of musculoskeletal and neuromuscular deficiencies. Its products are enabled by patented innovations encompassing a range of disciplines, such as orthotics, biomechanics, and embedded control systems.
