golf-ampThe 65th Annual National Amputee Golf Open Championship, which expects to see some of the top amputee golfers nationwide and worldwide, is scheduled for August 11 to 16. Madonna Rehabilitation Hospital and the Lincoln Convention & Visitors Bureau, in conjunction with Wilderness Ridge Golf Course, will reportedly present the event.

A news release from Madonna Rehabilitation Hospital notes that the championship amputee tournament will feature a 54-hole stroke play event for invited qualified players. The 36-hole Senior National Amputee Golf Open Championships and the International Cup will run in tandem with the event. Entry deadline for the championship is July 31, and current National Amputee Golf Association (NAGA) membership is required for participation.

The release notes that some of the accomplished amputee golfers who have registered for the event include Dick Krapfl, tournament host and educator with Lincoln Public Schools, and last year’s tournament champion. Additional scheduled attendees include Mike Reeder, Vietnam veteran amputee featured in 2011 on ESPN and ABC as the first wheelchair golfer to play the Old Course at St. Andrews.

Kim Moore, PGA golf professional, who has won nine consecutive titles since playing in the 2003 US National Championship, and Lucian Newman, MD, general surgeon from Alabama in current practice and arm amputee, are also expected to attend the event.

In the release, others who have registered for the event include Martin Ebel, NAGA legal advisor who lost the lower half of his body in an accident with a piece of heavy equipment, Chad Pfeifer, Army veteran, who lost his leg in Iraq, winner of the Wounded Warrior Golf Tournament for the last 2 years, and Woody Walker, who sustained lower leg injuries in 1971 and became an amputee in 1973. The release notes that Walker played for four national titles in the US, among many international competitions.
