invacareThe 33rd National Veterans Wheelchair Games was recently held July 13 to 18, with Elyria, Ohio-based company Invacare serving as a National Host Sponsor. The company adds that it has supported the Games since its inception in 1981.

Bill Lawson, national president of Paralyzed Veterans of America (PVA), adds that the organization thanks Invacare “for their continued support of the Games in their unending commitment to our veteran wheelchair athletes.” A recent news release notes that in additional to providing monetary support, Invacare’s employees volunteered throughout the week of the Games in an effort to ensure the veteran athletes’ wheelchairs are ready for competition.

Gerry Blouch, president, CEO, Invacare Corporation, states, “We have supported the Games for 33 years because of the individuals who compete and the heart, strength, and courage that they put into both their service to this country and their competitive spirit at the games,” Blouch says.

PVA and the Department of Veterans Affairs present the National Veterans Wheelchair Games annually. The Games are open to all US military veterans who use wheelchairs for sports competition as a result of spinal cord injury (SCI), certain neurological conditions, amputations, or other mobility impairments.

The Florida Gulf Coast Chapter of Paralyzed Veterans of America and James A. Haley Veterans’ Hospital reportedly hosted the 2013 Games. A total of eighteen competitive events are held during the games, including air guns, archery, basketball, boccia, bowling, field, handcycling, a motorized wheelchair rally, nine ball, power soccer, quad rugby, slalom, softball, swimming, table tennis, track, trapshooting and weightlifting.
