A home study continuing education course aims to broaden participants’ understanding of infections and the wound healing process. The “Understanding Infections and the Wound Healing Process” course provides an overview of how a healing wound can progress to an infected wound, according to the Healthclick website. A discussion of the factors that contribute to poor healing, along with signs and symptoms of an infected wound, are also included.
Upon completion of the course, participants will have accomplished a variety of course objectives, including understanding the underlying mechanisms of an infected wound, identifying factors that contribute to infection, and describing the signs and symptoms of an infected wound.
The course is also designed to educate participants in understanding how to prevent a wound from progressing to an infection, and using the “NERD” and “STONE” system to assess whether a wound is in the superficial or deep compartments.
According to www.healthclick.com, course author Mitzi Hazard, PT, CDE, CPed, has dedicated much of her career to studying effective treatments for wound care and to the prevention and treatment of diabetic neuropathic wounds. Hazard worked for Olympic Medical Center (OMC) in Sequim, Wash, serving as manager of rehabilitation services and a diabetes educator in the OMC ADA-accredited diabetes self-management education program. Hazard also reportedly served as a wound care resource for both rehabilitation and nursing staff, consulting on difficult wound cases of arterial, venous, and neuropathic origin. Hazard has developed staff education programs geared toward wound care, diabetes, custom foot orthotics, and the diabetic foot in the geriatric population. Healthclick notes that Hazard opened her own practice, Feet First Custom Orthotics, in 2004. Her practice specializes in custom foot orthotics and diabetic neuropathic ulcer management.
