The Sensory Integration Research and Rehabilitation Institute (SIRRI), which has locations in Deer Park, NY, and Tempe, Ariz, was founded in 2001 as a rehabilitation center specializing in sensory processing-related disorders, including stroke, traumatic brain injury, and children with special needs, such as autism, attention deficit, learning disabilities, and developmental delays. John W. Steinert, PT, president of SIRRI, recently spoke with Rehab Management about SIRRI’s development of a new multi-sensory exercise system, SenEx.

Q: Why did you develop SenEx?
A: SIRRI has grown and matured in the past couple of years from a single service provider to multiple services, incorporating different types of cognitive rehabilitation and processing related therapies with traditional approaches. SIRRI incorporated many disciplines in SenEx including PT, OT, SLP, and Cognitive Rehab. With SenEx, our goal was to build a world-class product that would service the professional the way the professional works, understanding the needs of the professional.

Q: What are the advantages of SenEx?
A: Its main advantages are its complete scope of functionality. It addresses multiple sensory processing systems, including the visual, auditory, vestibular, motor, tactile, and proprioceptive needs of the patient, simultaneously. It truly is a revolutionary product in terms of concept and functionality; it is a piece of equipment that is tremendously versatile. Our big push right now is that we want both research partners and clinic providers. We offer advantages to becoming a research partner, such as pricing discounts and more.

Q: What advantages does SenEx offer patients?
A: Since SenEx is multi-sensory training equipment, patients get a more complete opportunity for greater gains and return of function. The opportunity for recovery is greatly enhanced with SenEx. It creates sensory and motor neuro association stimulus to drive neuroplasticity and promote greater recovery.

Q: What type of research was done on this product?
A: In the past few years, research has been performed on currently existing models for multi-sensory therapy. SIRRI has been a leader in that area; we have identified different variables within existing products and developed SenEx, which can exceed those performance variables by a large margin.

Q: What current trends does your industry face?
A: SIRRI sees the market for pediatrics and neurological delays as being an incredible opportunity because of all the breakthroughs in the past few years about neuroplasticity and sensory processing. SIRRI sees SenEx as developing a new discipline and treatment philosophy for neurologically impaired children and adults with sensorimotor-related disorders.

Q: Where do you envision SIRRI in the next 5 years?
A: SIRRI will be the leader in multi-sensory processing rehabilitation. We have developed a patent-pending product, SenEx, specifically for the professional community. We will drive new trends in the rehabilitation community for neurological injuries such as developmental delays, traumatic brain injury, stroke, and sports performance, based on SenEx.
