PEOPLE IN THE NEWS HealthSouth To Sell Occupational Medicine Division HealthSouth Corp, Birmingham, Ala, signed a letter of intent to sell substantially all of its occupational medicine division to US HealthWorks, Alpharetta, Ga. Although the details of the transaction were not disclosed, the parties expect to complete the transaction by the end of the first quarter of 2001. HealthSouth provides outpatient surgery and rehabilitative health care services in 2,000 locations in the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, and Puerto Rico. Catholic Community Care Joins Consorta Consorta, Rolling Meadows, Ill, announced that Catholic Community Care, Cleveland, has joined its health care resource management and group purchasing organization. Catholic Community Care has 16 member organizations, including Catholic providers of skilled nursing, subacute care, rehabilitation, assisted living, independent living, home health, and community-based services in the eight-county Cleveland diocese. Consorta’s shareholder health care systems currently operate more than half of the Catholic hospitals in the United States. They own extended and alternate care sites, and are affiliated with other nonprofit hospitals, alternate care facilities, and educational and social service agencies. Shareholders have the option to extend Consorta services to other care providers and educators within their diocese. US Physical Therapy Reports Increased Revenues US Physical Therapy, Houston, announced a 64.4% jump in net income to $1,059,000 for the fourth quarter ended December 31, 2000, from $644,000 in the same period in 1999. For the full year, net income increased 56% to $3,735,000 from $2,394,000 the prior year. Net revenues for the fourth quarter increased 23.2% to $16,446,000 from $13,351,000 in the same 1999 period. Net revenues for all of 2000 rose 23.1% to $63,222,000 from $51,368,000 in 1999. The company credits these results to a 23.2% increase in patient visits to 697,000 for all of 2000 from the prior year. The company’s goal for 2001 is to open 30-35 new physical therapy centers.
