The Inside Track

John Vuckovich is president of Sports Medical Rehab, Northbrook, Ill, a division of Donovan Industries, based in Tampa. He recently spoke with Rehab Management about a variety of industry topics.

Q: Could you describe your company?

A: Donovan Industries is our parent company, and they are a supplier of disposable care products to institutional markets, such as nursing homes, hospitals, correctional facilities, and hotels. They manufacture personal hygiene, skin care, and baby care products; bags; tourniquets; and other specialty care products. Sports Medical Rehab, my division, offers a full line of rehabilitation products, with an emphasis on resistive exercise products.

Q: What products do you distribute?

A: The Resist-A-Band™ is one of our biggest-selling products. Also, all of our latex bands and exercise balls are consistent in thickness and resistive levels. That’s what we are known for. We specialize in exercise tubing, specifically dipped tubing. We also have a line of burst-resistant balls that are designed to avoid rapid deflation, which lessens the chance for injuries. All of our balls come with a pump and measuring device to assure the ball is properly inflated to the correct size. In addition, we carry the Ballert Training Orthosis, which comes in above-knee and below-knee versions. We also carry Ballert accessories, build-ups, and a heel kit. SMR offers a variety of exercise bars, measuring devices, air pumps, carpal care kits, shoulder pulleys, rubber bands, goniometers, dumbbells, and other products.

Q: What role does technology play in your company?

A: We utilize a state-of-the-art manufacturing facility that allows us to produce extremely consistent products of high quality. One example of that technology is Modulus Resistance Control. This is a manufacturing process that delivers excellent strength and consistent resistance that is unmatched in the industry.

Q: What do you see happening in the rehabilitation industry in terms of trends that affect how you do business?

A: One trend I am noticing more is that age groups are changing rapidly and, with that, so is demand. The main thing is that the Baby Boomer generation is aging, and along with it, the wellness category in general continues to grow quite rapidly. Baby Boomers want to be more active, and our products are very well suited to that increasing demand. Fitness and lifestyle are the big things that this age group is looking for, and I think that’s very good for our industry, in terms of us responding to their demand by producing higher quality products.

Q: What do you think the future will bring for your company?

A: Donovan Industries and Sports Medical Rehab will certainly continue to strive to improve and work on new products and technological advancements. We’re constantly striving to be better, and we are working on a variety of new products right now that we hope will enable us to do that.
