Years of Change

When I started at Rehab Management 2 years ago, I could not have predicted that the last issue I would edit would feature a "virtual rehabilitation" environment on the cover, but then not much about this industry has been predictable.

In this brief amount of time, those in this industry have witnessed major changes-not only in rehabilitation-but throughout the health care realm. From Medicare and prescription drug medication legislation, to the implementation of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, to a wealth of improvements in technology and products, much has evolved-in fact it would be hard to pinpoint the things that have stayed exactly the same.

This issue holds several examples of such progress. First, the cover story, "Get Real," focuses on a new technology at Clarkson University's Center for Assistive and Adaptive Technologies that helps participants "virtually" relearn kitchen skills. In "Theory Into Practice," the authors delve into two exciting areas of research in arm and shoulder rehabilitation: current hypotheses in neuroscience and new evidence in the treatment of tendonitis. And in "Creating New Balance," researcher David A. Brown, PT, PhD, looks at several current concepts-including use-dependent plasticity, dual-task paradigm, and implicit versus explicit learning-that will greatly affect the future of gait and balance training. Add to this an overview of how to get properly reimbursed for a power-operated vehicle, an update on back-to-work programs, and a wheelchair cushion "showcase," and you have plenty of information with which to arm yourselves as the industry advances. In coming issues, look for even more "cutting edge" technologies such as laser therapy and advances in standing systems.

While I will not be overseeing those issues, Rehab will safely be in the hands of the new editor, Chris Wolski, who has contributed dozens of articles to these pages over the years. Though I will no longer have a deep involvement in this community, I will continue to follow the goings-on in rehab, and especially, the fascinating people who work within it. Thank you for all your guidance over the last 2 years.
