Industry Update

Hygenic Expands Committee
The Hygenic Corp, Akron, Ohio, manufacturer of Thera-Band® products, has added four physical therapy and training experts to the Thera-Band Research and Advisory Committee (TRAC), an international steering committee for resistance exercise research and new product development. The new members are Timothy F. Tyler, MS, PT, ATC; Michael E. Rogers, PhD; Wojtek Chodzko-Zajko, PhD; and Jill Thein, MPT, ATC.

Benchmark Appoints Board Members
Musculoskeletal outpatient physical rehabilitation services provider Benchmark Medical Inc, Indiana, Pa, announced the appointment of John Kane and Lance Piccolo to its board of directors. Kane is the former president and COO of Cardinal Health Inc, and Piccolo is president and CEO of HealthPic Consultants Inc.

National Seating and Mobility Opens Office
National Seating and Mobility, Franklin, Tenn, announced the opening of its Champaign, Ill, office, the region's first dedicated, independent rehabilitation provider. The new service was established in conjunction with John Michael Morris, ATS, CRTS, a Champaign-based rehabilitation professional.

Restorative Care Orthosis Studied
A study of the Phase II adjustable ankle-foot orthosis manufactured by Restorative Care of America Inc, Clearwater, Fla, was completed by Samuel Grissom, MD, at the Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta. Grissom's objective was to assess the effectiveness of an adjustable ankle-foot orthosis in the treatment of plantarflexion contractures after central nervous system injury or disease. The conclusion of the study demonstrated significantly reduced contractures with minimal complications. The study was published in the February issue of Archives of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation.

Ricon Corp Attains ISO9001 Certification
Ricon Corp, Panorama City, Calif, announced that it had achieved ISO9001 Certification at its Panorama City facility. The company designs and manufactures wheelchair accessibility systems and solutions, including vehicular wheelchair lifts and ramps, adaptive mobility products, and public and residential accessibility products such as elevators, stair lifts, and vertical platform lifts.

Altimate Medical Receives Award
Altimate Medical (AMI), Morton, Minn, has been recertified for the Minnesota Safety and Health Achievement Recognition Program (MNSHARPS) award by the state's Department of Labor and Safety. The award is granted to firms in Minnesota that achieve and maintain excellence in workplace safety and health. This marks the fourth consecutive year that AMI has receiv- ed the award. Altimate manufactures and sells devices that help the physically handicapped to stand.

Bruno Honored
Bruno Independent Living Aids, Oconomowoc, Wis, has been named the top small business in Waukesha County by the Waukesha Area Chamber of Commerce. Bruno was chosen because of its positive growth and strong community relations.

Dumex Medical Launches Program
Dumex Medical, Marietta, Ga, announced the launch of its new wound care program, WoundCareDirect. The program is designed to provide numerous tools to help those requiring and administering wound care, including a comprehensive Web site (www.woundcaredirect.com) focused on wound care education. In addition, the company offers an array of educational services, including videos, brochures, and consumer and professional sourcebooks. Durex Medical has been a manufacturer and distributor of wound care products for 20 years.

Leisure-Lift Publishes Buyers' Guide
In an effort to help scooter customers and retailers become more knowledgeable about scooter design and safety issues, Leisure-Lift/PaceSaver, Kansas City, Kan, has put out a free safety/buyers' guide. Using examples from Food and Drug Administration reports and independent scooter tests and surveys, the guide explains how the various scooter designs affect safe use of the devices.

Worksite International Accredited
Worksite International, Monterey, Calif, announced that it has received accreditation for its ergonomics training program; it is the first organization to offer such a program outside a university. The course was accredited for physical and occupational therapists by a national ergonomics board, the Oxford Research Institute. The program received the "5-Star Seal of Ergonomics Excellence."

SunBridge Facility Earns Award
SunBridge Care and Rehab for North Shore, Lynn, Mass, has received the SunDance Rehabilitation Excellence Award. The award recognizes long-term care facilities for excellence in physical, occupational, and speech therapy. Qualifying facilities are selected on the basis of a continuous quality improvement audit that reviews patient care, documentations, information systems, quality assessment and improvement, environment, and equipment. Measures of staff and resident satisfaction also factor in a facility's score.
