Winners of the 42nd Annual Maddak Awards Competition for Product Design were announced recently during the American Occupational Therapy Association conference in Chicago.
“Interest in the Maddak Awards continues to grow, and with 40 entries this year our panel of volunteer judges certainly had their work cut out for them,” says Susan Tulanowski, brand manager at Wayne, NJ-based Maddak/SP Ableware, who presented the awards at a Maddak/SP Ableware-sponsored breakfast held during the meeting, according to a media release.
Award winners for 2016 included: Jon Turnquist, MOL, OTR/L, ATP and Director of Assistive Technology at St. Ambrose University, who was awarded first place and $1000 in the Professional category for his Low Vision Tray (LVT); and Susie Haroutounian from West Coast University, who was awarded first place in the Student category and $500 for her Motorized Bedside Table.
Cabarrus College of Health Sciences, located in Concord, NC, won the Maddak Intercollegiate Challenge with 13 entries.
“This is the 2nd time since the Intercollegiate Challenge was added to the Maddak Awards in 2014 that Cabarrus College has won this title,” states Tulanowski in the release.
“Schools with Occupational Therapy programs are encouraged to include the Maddak Awards as part of their course curriculum. It gives students and professors a chance to rally together and support each other,” she adds.
The Maddak Awards Competition took place April 7 during the AOTA Conference. A volunteer panel of judges comprised of occupational therapy practitioners judged each entry based on originality, therapeutic value, and function. The awards were then given out the following day during the breakfast, according to the release.
