Clinicians across several disciplines will have an opportunity to explore an new approach for treating amputees that focuses on surgical attachment of a prosthetic limb via osseointegration surgery. Munjed Al Muderis, a Sydney, Australia-based orthopedic surgeon, will present the lecture, hosted by Helen Hayes Hospital.
Al Muderis is scheduled to present two lectures at Helen Hayes Hospital in West Haverstraw April 3. One lecture will be directed at informing and educating clinicians, while another will focus on patients and caregivers. The lectures will explore the use of the Osseointegration Prosthetic Limb (OPL), reportedly developed by Al Muderis and the Osseointegration Group of Australia.
The osseointegration surgery at the core of the lectures is described in a media release from Helen Hayes Hospital as a procedure in which a stem made of a solid titanium core is implanted directly into the patient’s bone. This stem connects directly to external upper or lower limb prosthesis, with the intended outcome of a limb that moves more naturally and without the discomfort sometimes associated with traditional prosthetic devices.
Several patients will join Al Muderis at the lecture. Among the patients will be one unilateral and one bilateral above-the-knee OPL, as well as one patient with a below-the-knee OPL.
