ADA Legacy Tour to Kick off at Abilities Expo Houston

The ADA Legacy Tour, a traveling exhibit designed to raise public awareness and generate excitement regarding the approaching 25th anniversary in 2015 of the passing of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA25), is set to kick off at Abilities Expo Houston on July 25 at the NRG Center, Hall E.

During the event, Lex Frieden, recognized disability activist and one of the chief architects of the ADA, is scheduled to lead an 11:30 am press conference. During the conference, the Office of the Mayor Annise Parker will also bestow a proclamation to memorialize the occasion, the release notes.

The ADA Legacy Project, Disability Rights Center, ADA National Network, and the Museum of disABILITY History produce the tour. The ADA Legacy Project’s mission centers on preserving disability history, celebrating its significant events, and educating the public and future generations of advocates.

A news release from the Abilities Expo notes that the year-long, nationwide tour will ultimately conclude in Washington DC July 26, exactly 25 years after President George HW Bushing signed the ADA into law.

According to the release, as part of the Abilities Expo, the ADA Legacy Tour is slated to feature the ADA Bus, which is a four-panel display exhibiting the history of self-advocacy, displays on the preservation of disability history, celebrations of disability history milestones, efforts to educate future generations of disability advocates, and more.

Admission is free, the release notes, and Expo hours run Friday and Saturday from 11:00 am to 5:00 pm, and Sunday 11:00 am to 4:00 pm.

David Korse, president and CEO of Abilities Expo, articulates the organization’s excitement in playing a part of the ADA Legacy Tour, adding “The Expo provides the community of people with disabilities access to life-enhancing products, education, resources and fun. And, like the ADA Legacy Tour, Abilities Expo is a celebration of what you can do.”

The expo is set to run from July 25 to 27. The release also states that complimentary loaner scooters, wheelchair repair, and a power chair charging station will be available during show hours.
