Seminar Offers “Hands-On” Experience in Wheelchair Seating and Positioning
A 1-day seminar produced by Kirsten Davin, OTD, OTR/L, ATP, SMS, seeks to provide healthcare professionals and therapists hands-on, working knowledge of wheelchair seating and positioning systems. According to the Cross Country Education website, during the “Hands-on! Wheelchair Seating and Positioning” seminar, participants will pinpoint postural issues and deformities that may be present within a client and integrate those considerations into the creation of a custom seating system.
The site notes that interactive techniques will be implemented as attendees personally adapt, carve, and create mock seating systems, while gaining valuable knowledge that can be implemented immediately in the clinic. Participants will also learn about the benefits of pressure mapping and have the opportunity to experience pressure mapping first-hand.
According to the site, the seminar is designed for individuals who face challenging seating and positioning issues in the clinic. Following the course’s completion, participants will have gained tangible knowledge, tips, and cost-saving techniques that can be put to immediate use.
Seminar objectives include examining major content areas of RESNA’s Assistive Technology Professional (ATP) and Seating and Mobility Specialist (SMS) examinations, as well as using review questions to develop a strong knowledge base in preparation for passing both the ATP and SMS exams. Additional objectives include identifying and measuring pelvic and spinal asymmetries in adult and pediatric populations, and creating seating systems and supports to address these issues. Attendees will also discuss the process of selecting and implementing various cervical support systems for adult and pediatric populations.
Davin, known for her seminar Let’s Roll! The Art of Performing Seating and Mobility Evaluations, has extensive experience in a range of practice areas, including inpatient, acute care, and intensive care units. Davin is also the owner of home health-based private practice Escape Mobility Solutions LLC.
