Abilities Expo New York Metro is slated for May 3 through 5 at the New Jersey Convention & Expo Center. A recent news release reports that the Expo features a variety of products, services, education, expo ambassadors, and fun activities.
These activities include a workshop held by Deborah Pierce, AIA, CAPS, author of The Accessible Home. The workshop is designed to educate attendees about accessible and universal design, fitting a home to the requirements of all occupants who live there, “whether they use a wheelchair, a white cane, bifocals, or hearing aids.”
The Expo also includes a product spotlight on the Love Handles RX, a product featuring two elliptical arms designed to attach easily to most chairs and wheelchairs to provide upper extremity rehabilitation and cardiovascular fitness from a seated position.
Martial Arts Therapy (MAT) is also among the offered activities during the Expo, according to the release. The Therapy is intended to train students and patients to be in control of their bodies through pain/fear management and physical rehabilitation skills, including proprioceptive training.
Ann Eubank, LMSW, OTR/L, ATP, CAPS, UsersFirst, is also exhibiting during the Expo, encouraging participants to “Help Save the Wheelchair—Before It’s Too Late.” Eubank encourages advocacy to combat challenging insurance policies facing wheelchair users by asking individuals to download and complete the UsersFirst Mobile Registration Form, to allow the organization to track their recruiting efforts to Save the Wheelchair.
The event is also slated to include a variety of ambassador stories, each documenting individuals who have overcome the challenges they face with their disabilities by engaging in adaptive sports and other forms of athletism, emphasizing that “anyone can be an athlete.”
