Invacare Corporation, Elyria, Ohio, has announced itself as a national host sponsor for the 31st National Veterans Wheelchair Games in Pittsburgh, Pa, August 1-6, 2011.

More than 600 athletes from 46 states, Puerto Rico, and Great Britain will compete in the National Veterans Wheelchair Games this year. Invacare will send more than 40 volunteers to assist with transportation and repairs to make sure the athletes are competition-ready.

“The National Veterans Wheelchair Games is one of the most important events that Invacare sponsors throughout the year,” said Gerry Blouch, president and Chief Executive Officer at Invacare Corp. “For 31 years, our associates have been proud to volunteer and be a part of the action of the games doing whatever they can to help the athletes guarantee optimal performance.”

The Games, sponsored jointly by the US Department of Veterans Affairs and the Paralyzed Veterans of America, is the largest annual wheelchair sports event in the world. More athletes are participating this year than ever before in the 7-day event. This event offers 17 different sports to veterans who use wheelchairs due to spinal cord injuries, amputations, and neurological diseases.

The Games promote rehabilitation through rigorous competition in such events as basketball, rugby, softball, handcycling, and others. For a full schedule of events and other details on the games, go to www.wheelchairgames.va.gov.
